Millions of South Africans May Be Receiving This Grant — Are You Missing Out?

South Africa · Social Relief of Distress

The SRD Grant is still open. Many eligible people have never applied.

The South African government created the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant to support people who have no income and are struggling to meet their basic needs.

Over 13 million people have already received it. But thousands who qualify have still never claimed it — simply because they didn’t know they were eligible.

Basic requirements

To receive the grant, you need to meet a few basic conditions set by SASSA:

  • South African citizen, refugee, or asylum seeker
  • Between 18 and 59 years old
  • No income or income below the threshold
  • Not receiving any other government grant
  • Not living in a government-funded institution
Most people who qualify are not formally employed and have no UIF benefits — if this sounds like your situation, you may already meet the main criteria.

What many people don’t know

The application process has changed. SASSA now uses an online system — and many applications that should have been approved were declined due to small errors in the form.

⚠ Applications can be rejected for reasons that are easy to fix — but only if you know what to look for before you apply.

Before you apply — or if you were already declined — there are a few key things worth checking first.

Already receiving but not sure if it continues?

Many people who were approved months ago no longer receive payments — without any warning from SASSA. A simple data mismatch is enough to pause your grant.
