Do You Really Qualify for the SRD Grant? Here’s What SASSA Actually Checks

South Africa · SRD Grant · Eligibility

If you found this page, there’s a good chance you may already qualify.

The SRD Grant has already helped over 13 million South Africans cover basic expenses every month. But SASSA’s data shows that a significant number of eligible people were either never approved — or stopped receiving payments without knowing why.

Understanding the full criteria — and the common mistakes — can make all the difference.

Who qualifies

SASSA evaluates each application individually. These are the confirmed criteria for the current cycle:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker
  • Between 18 and 59 years of age
  • Currently unemployed with no income
  • Not registered for UIF or receiving UIF payments
  • Not receiving any other SASSA grant
  • Bank account or valid payment method on record
  • Personal details matching SASSA and Home Affairs records
If your details are fully up to date and you meet these points, your application has a strong chance of being approved in the current cycle.

Why applications get rejected

Even people who fully qualify are sometimes declined. SASSA’s system flags accounts automatically — and small issues can trigger a rejection without warning.

  • Name or ID number doesn’t match Home Affairs records
  • Bank account listed under a different name
  • Old phone number still linked to the application
  • Income detected from a third-party check (even informal work)
  • Application submitted before a previous one was fully closed
✗ Some people who were approved and receiving payments lost access after a routine SASSA data check — without any notification sent to them.

This is why checking your application status — even if you were previously approved — is important before the next payment cycle closes.

Real situation

Thandi, 34 — Johannesburg

“I was receiving the grant for 4 months, then it just stopped. I didn’t get any message. When I checked, it said my bank details didn’t match anymore. I had changed accounts and forgot to update.”

⚠ If your banking details, phone number, or personal information has changed at any point — your current application may already be at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I qualify if I do occasional or informal work?
SASSA uses third-party data to check for income. If informal earnings are detected — even irregular ones — your application may be flagged. The safest approach is to ensure your registered details accurately reflect your current situation before applying.
What does “income below the threshold” mean?
SASSA sets a monthly income limit for SRD eligibility. If your total income — including any grants, transfers, or informal earnings — exceeds this threshold, your application will be declined. The exact threshold is confirmed on the SASSA portal.
I was approved before but stopped receiving. What happened?
SASSA runs monthly eligibility checks. If your personal data, banking details, or income status changed — even slightly — your payments can be paused automatically. Updating your profile on the SASSA portal usually resolves this.
Does being a refugee or asylum seeker affect my eligibility?
Refugees with Section 24 permits and asylum seekers with valid Section 22 permits may qualify for the SRD Grant, as long as all other criteria are met. Your permit status must be valid and up to date at the time of application.
Can two people in the same household both receive the grant?
Yes. The SRD Grant is assessed per individual, not per household. Multiple people living at the same address can each apply and receive the grant independently, as long as each person meets the individual eligibility criteria.
