R530 Per Child Every Month — The South African Grant Most Caregivers Don’t Know About

South Africa · Child Support Grant · SASSA

Millions of caregivers in South Africa receive this grant every month — many who qualify have never applied.

The Child Support Grant is a monthly payment from the South African government designed to help caregivers provide for children in their care.

It is one of the largest social support programmes in the country — and the value per child is R530 per month. If you care for more than one child, you may receive it for each one.

Who can receive it

The grant is paid to the primary caregiver of the child — not necessarily the biological parent. SASSA looks at a few basic conditions:

  • The child must be under 18 years old
  • The caregiver must be a South African citizen, refugee, or asylum seeker
  • The caregiver’s income must be below the means test threshold
  • The child must not be in a government-funded institution
  • The caregiver must be the primary person responsible for the child
You do not need to be the biological parent to qualify. Grandmothers, aunts, older siblings and other caregivers are eligible as long as they are the primary person caring for the child.

What most caregivers don’t know

Many caregivers who qualify have never applied — and some who were already receiving the grant lost access without being notified.

⚠ SASSA runs regular checks on all active grants. If your personal details or the child’s information is outdated, payments can be paused without warning.

Before applying — or if your payments have stopped — there are specific things worth checking first.

Already receiving but payments stopped?

Some caregivers who received the grant for months suddenly stopped getting paid — without any explanation from SASSA. A small detail like an outdated ID or a change in contact number is enough to pause the grant automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Child Support Grant?
The Child Support Grant is a monthly payment of R530 per child provided by the South African government through SASSA. It is paid to the primary caregiver of children under 18 who meet the eligibility criteria.
Can I receive it for more than one child?
Yes. The Child Support Grant is assessed per child, not per household. If you are the primary caregiver of multiple children who each meet the criteria, you can receive the grant for each one separately.
Do I need to be the biological parent?
No. The grant is paid to whoever is the primary caregiver — this includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, or any adult who is the main person responsible for the child’s daily care and wellbeing.
What is the income limit to qualify?
SASSA applies a means test to determine eligibility. The caregiver’s income must fall below a set threshold. The exact current threshold is confirmed on the official SASSA portal. If you have no formal income, you are very likely to qualify.
Is the Child Support Grant still active in 2025?
Yes. The Child Support Grant is a permanent programme — unlike the SRD Grant, it does not require annual renewal. Applications are accepted at any time through SASSA offices or the official online portal.
