R370 per month, per person
Monthly reassessment cycle

The SRD Grant has been extended until 31 March 2027, with the amount unchanged at R370.

Who this grant is for

According to the official criteria, the SRD Grant is intended for South African citizens, permanent residents, recognised refugees, asylum seekers or special permit holders (Zimbabwe, Angola or Lesotho dispensations) aged 18 to 60, who have insufficient means, are not already receiving another social grant, are not contributing to or eligible for UIF, and have no other financial support.

A court case is currently underway regarding some of the rules that govern this grant, including the income threshold and the online-only application requirement. Until that process is finalised, the rules described in this article remain the ones currently applied. It’s worth checking the official SASSA channels for the latest position.

How the money is paid

Depending on the preference selected when applying or updating a profile, payment is generally made through:

🏦 Bank deposit Account in your own name
🏪 Cash collection At a designated retailer or Post Office, with your ID
A bank account used to receive the grant must be registered in your own name. Using someone else’s account is a common cause of payment issues.

How to apply — step by step

The application is currently done online through the official SASSA portal. General steps:

  1. 1 Go to srd.sassa.gov.za — confirm the URL is exactly this before entering anything
  2. 2 Enter your South African ID number (or file/permit number for asylum seekers and special permit holders) and a cellphone number you control
  3. 3 Verify your identity with the OTP sent by SMS to that number
  4. 4 Read and accept the declaration and consent, and complete your personal, employment and banking details
  5. 5 Submit, then check your status on the portal — processing times vary, so don’t rely only on an SMS
⚠ The only official application channel is srd.sassa.gov.za. Any other site asking for your ID or banking details in exchange for applying is not authorised.

Once submitted, your application is not a one-time event: SASSA reassesses eligibility automatically every month against government databases. You do not need to reapply each month, but you do need to keep your details current and respond if SASSA asks you to reconfirm anything.

Common mistakes when applying

Tap each to see what it is and how to avoid it.

Using an inactive or unregistered phone number +
OTP verification and SASSA notifications go to the registered phone number. If that number is inactive or belongs to someone else, verification and status updates won’t reach you. Register a number you currently control and can receive SMS on.
Using banking details that aren’t in your name +
A grant cannot be paid into an account that doesn’t belong to the applicant. Use a personal account registered under your own legal name, exactly as it appears on your ID.
Submitting a duplicate application +
If a previous application is still active, submitting a new one can create a conflict and may be flagged as suspicious. Check your existing status before submitting again.
Paying someone to apply on your behalf +
The application is free. Giving someone else your ID and banking details to “help” carries a real risk of identity fraud. Apply yourself through the official portal, or ask a trusted person to assist you directly rather than doing it on your behalf for a fee.

Protect yourself from scams

As the SRD Grant became widely known, fraudsters began targeting applicants. Common scams to watch for:

  • Fake SASSA websites that look like the official portal but collect ID and banking details. Always confirm the URL is exactly srd.sassa.gov.za.
  • Paid application “helpers” who charge to apply on your behalf. The application is free.
  • Messages claiming to be SASSA “agents” offering to speed up an application for a fee, or asking for your OTP or banking PIN. SASSA never needs these to approve a grant or release a payment.
  • SMS or links asking you to “unlock” a blocked grant. Check your status directly on the official portal instead of clicking a link.
If someone asks for money to help you apply for the SRD Grant, or for your OTP or banking PIN, it is a scam. Report it or call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11.

If your application is declined

If declined, you have the right to lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development for that specific month, generally within 90 days of the decision. Because eligibility is reassessed monthly, a decline in one month does not necessarily mean you’ll be declined the next.

Frequently asked questions

When does the payment arrive each month?
Payments are typically processed toward the end of each month, though the exact date varies by payment method and when the application was approved. Check the current status and payment date directly on the SASSA SRD portal.
Can I change my payment method after applying?
Yes, through the SASSA SRD portal. Changes may take one or more payment cycles to take effect. Make sure any new method is registered under your own name.
What if I don’t have a bank account?
Cash collection at designated retailers or the Post Office is generally offered as an alternative. Select this option when applying or updating your preferences, and bring your ID when collecting.
How long does a decision take after applying?
Processing times vary and have been reported anywhere from a few business days to a few weeks. If you don’t hear anything after a reasonable period, check your status directly on the portal rather than waiting indefinitely for an SMS.
Is the SASSA SRD portal safe to use?
The official portal is srd.sassa.gov.za. Always confirm the URL before entering personal information, and never use a third-party site that claims to process SRD applications on your behalf.
What do I do if my payment didn’t arrive?
First check your status on the SASSA portal for that month. If it shows approved but no payment arrived, confirm your banking details are correct, then contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or visit your nearest office.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No. Once your initial application is active, SASSA reassesses your eligibility automatically each month. You only need to act if your details change, or if your grant is cancelled and needs to be reinstated.
