The SASSA Disability Grant currently provides eligible adults with up to R2,400 per month. Approval, the amount awarded and continued payment depend on SASSA’s medical, financial and administrative assessment.

This guide explains the current maximum amount, payment methods, application process, documents, payment dates, reviews and appeal rights.

What is the Disability Grant?

The Disability Grant is intended for an adult whose physical or mental disability makes them unfit to work for longer than six months, subject to SASSA’s assessment and the applicable financial requirements.

A temporary Disability Grant may be awarded when the disability is expected to last continuously for at least six months but no longer than 12 months.

A permanent Disability Grant may be considered when the disability is expected to continue for more than 12 months. The word “permanent” does not mean that the grant is automatically paid for life. Eligibility can still be reviewed.

How much is the Disability Grant in 2026?

From April 2026, the published maximum Disability Grant amount is R2,400 per month.

Important: R2,400 is the maximum amount, not a guaranteed flat payment for every approved applicant. SASSA applies a means test, and the grant may be calculated on a sliding scale according to the applicant’s and, where applicable, the spouse’s income and assets.

Official pages reviewed for this update did not present one fully consistent set of current numerical means-test limits. For that reason, this article does not publish an unverified income or asset threshold. Confirm the current limits directly with SASSA before applying.

Who may qualify?

SASSA assesses each application individually. The main requirements include:

  • ✓ Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee residing in South Africa.
  • ✓ Be between 18 and 59 years old.
  • ✓ Have a disability that is confirmed through the required medical or functional assessment.
  • ✓ Meet the applicable means test, including the assessment of a spouse’s finances when relevant.
  • ✓ Not be maintained or cared for in a state-funded institution.
  • ✓ Not receive another social grant in respect of yourself, apart from any supplementary benefit that may separately apply.

A diagnosis by itself does not guarantee approval. SASSA considers the medical or functional effect of the condition, the person’s ability to work and the other eligibility requirements.

How to apply

Applicants can use the official SASSA online service to book a disability-related assessment. After the assessment, the application may be completed and submitted online.

Anyone who cannot use the online platform can visit a SASSA local office for assistance.

  1. 1 Review the age, residence, medical and means-test requirements.
  2. 2 Obtain a signed and stamped referral letter containing clinical information from the treating health practitioner or institution.
  3. 3 Book the disability assessment through the official SASSA Services Portal or ask a SASSA local office for assistance.
  4. 4 Complete the required medical or functional assessment.
  5. 5 Submit the completed application and all requested supporting documents online or with assistance at a SASSA office.
  6. 6 Keep the receipt, reference number and copies of the documents submitted.
Application warning: The official process is free. Do not pay an unknown person who promises approval, faster processing or the release of grant money.

Use only the official SASSA Services Portal or obtain assistance from a verified SASSA office.

Documents you may need

The documents requested depend on the applicant’s circumstances. Current official guidance includes:

  • ✓ Certified copy of the applicant’s valid 13-digit barcoded ID or another form of identification accepted by SASSA.
  • ✓ The spouse’s identification when the applicant is married.
  • ✓ Valid refugee permit where the application is made by a recognised refugee.
  • ✓ Proof of marital status, such as a marriage certificate, divorce order, spouse’s death certificate or affidavit where applicable.
  • ✓ Latest payslip, not older than three months, for the applicant and spouse where applicable.
  • ✓ Three months of statements for all active bank accounts held by the applicant and spouse.
  • ✓ Bank account confirmation letter or statements for the account intended to receive payment.
  • ✓ Proof of assets, investments and permissible deductions where relevant.
  • ✓ Signed and stamped clinical referral letter completed by the treating practitioner or institution.

SASSA may request proof of residence or additional documents during the individual screening process. The medical assessment used for the application should not be older than three months.

How Disability Grant payments are made

The official government service page lists the following payment arrangements:

🏦 Electronic deposit Into a bank account, including Postbank
💵 Specific pay point Cash on the designated day
🏠 Approved institution Where an eligible institution administers payment

Banks may charge account-related service fees. Payment arrangements and verification requirements should be confirmed with SASSA before changing accounts or travelling to a payment point.

Disability Grant payment dates

SASSA publishes a staggered calendar for social grant payments. The remaining Disability Grant dates in the published 2026/2027 schedule are:

Payment monthPublished Disability Grant date
August 20265 August 2026
September 20263 September 2026
October 20265 October 2026
November 20264 November 2026
December 20263 December 2026
January 20276 January 2027
February 20273 February 2027
March 20273 March 2027
Payment dates may be officially amended. Confirm the current schedule before travelling, especially around public holidays or operational changes.

When does the first payment arrive?

SASSA states that processing may take up to three months. The date of application is normally recorded when all required documents have been submitted and verified as meeting the application requirements.

If the application is approved, the date of award will usually be the valid application date. This means payment is generally due from that date, rather than only from the month in which the decision was issued.

Keep the application receipt and reference details. If no outcome is received, follow up through a SASSA local office, the official contact centre or the official grants enquiry email address.

Reviews, suspension and lapsing

Approval does not remove the obligation to keep SASSA informed. Beneficiaries should report relevant changes to their personal, medical, marital, residential or financial circumstances.

A grant may be reviewed or suspended when:

  • × The beneficiary does not cooperate with a verification or review.
  • × Financial, marital, medical or residential circumstances change.
  • × Required documents are missing or not updated.
  • × Information was misrepresented or the grant was approved in error.
  • × Fraudulent activity is identified or suspected.

A Disability Grant may lapse when:

  • × A temporary Disability Grant reaches its expiry date.
  • × The recipient passes away.
  • × The recipient is admitted to a state-funded care institution.
  • × An approved grant is not claimed within the applicable period.
  • × The recipient remains outside South Africa beyond the permitted period or no longer meets the residency requirements.

What if the application is refused?

SASSA should provide a written decision explaining why the application was unsuccessful.

An applicant who disagrees with the decision may appeal to the Minister of Social Development. The appeal must be lodged within 90 days of receiving notification of the unsuccessful outcome.

Ask for the exact written reason before submitting an appeal. Keep the decision letter, application receipt, medical documents and proof of every enquiry.

What happens when the beneficiary turns 60?

The Disability Grant eligibility age ends at 59, while the Older Persons Grant applies from age 60.

Current official sources reviewed for this article did not clearly confirm that every recipient is automatically transferred without any further verification or application step. Contact SASSA before turning 60 to confirm what must be done in the individual case.

For a child younger than 18 who has a severe disability and requires full-time and special care, review the separate Care Dependency Grant guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is every approved applicant paid R2,400?
Not necessarily. R2,400 is the published maximum from April 2026. The Disability Grant is subject to a means test and may be calculated on a sliding scale.
How long can the application take?
The published processing time is up to three months. If approved, the grant is generally payable from the valid application date.
Can a Disability Grant recipient receive another grant?
An applicant generally cannot receive another main social grant for themselves. Grant-in-Aid is different because it is a supplementary benefit that may be considered when an existing Disability Grant recipient requires regular assistance from another person.
What if the beneficiary’s condition or income changes?
Relevant medical, employment, income, asset, marital, address or banking changes should be reported to SASSA. Continued eligibility may be reviewed.
Can the payment method be changed?
Contact a SASSA office or the official contact centre to confirm the current process, documents and verification required. Do not assume that a change will automatically take effect in the next payment cycle.
How long does an applicant have to appeal?
An appeal against an unsuccessful ordinary social grant application should be lodged within 90 days of receiving the decision.
