How much is the Disability Grant?

From April 2026, the published maximum Disability Grant amount is R2,400 per month.

Who may qualify?

• ✓ Not be maintained or cared for in a state-funded institution.

How to apply

Applicants may use the official SASSA Services Portal to book a disability-related assessment. After the assessment, the application and certified supporting documents may be submitted online.

People who cannot use the online service may visit a SASSA local office for assistance.

1. 1 Review the age, residence, medical and means-test requirements.
2. 2 Obtain a signed and stamped referral letter containing clinical information from the treating practitioner or institution.
3. 3 Book the required medical or functional assessment through the portal or with assistance from a SASSA office.
4. 4 Complete the assessment. The medical assessment used for the application must not be older than three months.
5. 5 Submit the completed application and all requested supporting documents online or at a SASSA office.
6. 6 Keep the application receipt, reference details and copies of every document submitted.

Documents you may need

The documents requested depend on the applicant’s circumstances. Current official guidance includes:

• ✓ Certified copy of a valid 13-digit barcoded ID or another form of identification accepted by SASSA.
• ✓ Identification for the spouse when the applicant is married.
• ✓ Valid Section 24 refugee permit when applying as a recognised refugee.
• ✓ Proof of marital status, where applicable.
• ✓ Latest payslip, not older than three months, for the applicant and spouse where applicable.
• ✓ Three months of statements for all active bank accounts held by the applicant and spouse.
• ✓ Confirmation letter or recent statements for the account intended to receive payment.
• ✓ Proof of income, assets, investments, pensions and permissible deductions.
• ✓ Signed and stamped clinical referral letter completed by the treating practitioner or institution.

SASSA may request proof of residence or other documents during individual screening. Additional documents uploaded online should be valid, certified where required and clearly legible.

When does the first payment arrive?

SASSA states that processing may take up to three months. The date of application is normally recorded when all required documents have been submitted and verified as meeting the application requirements.

If the application is approved, the date of award is generally the valid application date. This means payment is normally due from that date, rather than only from the month in which the decision was issued.

Reviews, suspended payments and lapsing

Approval does not guarantee that the grant will continue without interruption under every future circumstance. Beneficiaries should inform SASSA about relevant changes to their medical, financial, marital, residential or contact information.

A grant may be suspended because of:

• × Failure to cooperate with a review or verification process.
• × Changes in marital status, address, income, assets or other relevant circumstances.
• × Improved financial circumstances that make the beneficiary ineligible.
• × Missing or unsubmitted documents.
• × Misrepresentation, fraud or approval made in error.

A Disability Grant may lapse because of:

• × Expiry of a temporary Disability Grant.
• × Death of the beneficiary.
• × Admission to a state-funded care institution.
• × Failure to claim the grant within the applicable period.
• × No longer meeting the refugee or South African residence requirements.

What happens when the beneficiary turns 60?

Disability Grant eligibility applies to people aged 18 to 59, while the Older Persons Grant applies from age 60.

Current official sources reviewed for this article do not clearly confirm that every recipient is automatically transferred without any additional verification or administrative step. Contact SASSA before turning 60 to confirm what must be done.

What if the application is refused?

SASSA should provide a written decision explaining why an application was unsuccessful.

An applicant who disagrees with the decision may appeal. The appeal for an ordinary social grant must be lodged within 90 days of receiving notification of the decision.
