R2,180 Every Month — The South African Senior Grant Most Families Don’t Know About

South Africa · Older Persons Grant · SASSA

South Africans over 60 may be entitled to a monthly government grant — and many who qualify have never applied.

The Older Persons Grant is a monthly payment from the South African government provided through SASSA to support senior citizens who meet the eligibility criteria.

It is one of the highest-value social grants in the country — and millions of South Africans are already receiving it every month. If you are over 60, or caring for someone who is, this may apply to you.

R2,180 per month (age 60–74)
R2,200 per month (age 75+)

Who can receive it

The grant is paid directly to the eligible person. SASSA assesses a few basic conditions:

  • 60 years of age or older
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker
  • Income and assets below the means test threshold
  • Not living in a government-funded institution
  • Not already receiving another SASSA grant of equal or higher value
If you have a parent, grandparent, or elderly relative over 60 who has no formal income, they may qualify — even if they have never worked in the formal sector.

What many families don’t know

Many elderly South Africans who qualify have never applied — and some who were already receiving the grant lost access without any notification from SASSA.

⚠ SASSA runs regular data checks on all active grants. Outdated personal details or a change in banking information is enough to pause payments without warning.

Before applying — or if payments have stopped — there are specific things worth checking first.

Payments already stopped?

Some elderly recipients had their grant paused after a routine SASSA system check — without any explanation. A small data mismatch is enough to trigger an automatic suspension. The good news is it can usually be resolved quickly once the issue is identified.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Older Persons Grant?
The Older Persons Grant is a monthly payment provided by the South African government through SASSA to eligible citizens aged 60 and above. It pays R2,180 per month for those between 60 and 74, and R2,200 for those aged 75 and older.
Can I apply on behalf of an elderly parent or relative?
Yes. A family member or caregiver can assist with the application process. However, the grant is paid directly to the eligible person. If the person is unable to collect or manage payments themselves, a procurator can be appointed through SASSA.
Does having a small pension affect eligibility?
It depends. SASSA applies a means test that considers total income and assets. A small informal pension may still allow you to qualify if total income falls below the threshold. The exact threshold is confirmed on the official SASSA portal.
Is this grant still active in 2025?
Yes. The Older Persons Grant is a permanent SASSA programme. It does not require annual renewal and applications are accepted at any time through SASSA offices or the official portal.
What if my elderly parent has no bank account?
SASSA offers cash collection at Post Office branches and selected retail points as alternatives to bank transfers. This can be selected during the application process and changed at any time by visiting a SASSA office.
