South Africa · Child Support Grant · SASSA
Millions of caregivers in South Africa receive this grant every month — many who qualify have never applied.
The Child Support Grant is a monthly payment from the South African government designed to help caregivers provide for children in their care.
It is one of the largest social support programmes in the country — and the value per child is R530 per month. If you care for more than one child, you may receive it for each one.

Who can receive it
The grant is paid to the primary caregiver of the child — not necessarily the biological parent. SASSA looks at a few basic conditions:
- ✓ The child must be under 18 years old
- ✓ The caregiver must be a South African citizen, refugee, or asylum seeker
- ✓ The caregiver’s income must be below the means test threshold
- ✓ The child must not be in a government-funded institution
- ✓ The caregiver must be the primary person responsible for the child

What most caregivers don’t know
Many caregivers who qualify have never applied — and some who were already receiving the grant lost access without being notified.
Before applying — or if your payments have stopped — there are specific things worth checking first.

Already receiving but payments stopped?
Some caregivers who received the grant for months suddenly stopped getting paid — without any explanation from SASSA. A small detail like an outdated ID or a change in contact number is enough to pause the grant automatically.
