What this car loan calculator is estimating
The calculator starts with the vehicle price and subtracts the down payment to estimate how much money needs to be financed. It then uses the financing rate and loan tenure you entered to estimate your monthly instalment.
It also shows the estimated total financing cost. This is important because a smaller monthly payment does not necessarily mean a cheaper car loan. Extending the financing period can reduce the amount paid each month while increasing the amount of time you remain committed to the loan.
Included in your estimate
- Vehicle purchase price
- Down payment
- Amount financed
- Annual financing rate
- Loan tenure
- Estimated monthly instalment
- Total interest or profit
- Total financing repayment
How the calculation works
From the car price to your estimated monthly instalment
1. Start with the price of the car
Enter the selling price of the new, used or reconditioned vehicle you are considering.
2. Subtract your down payment
The amount you pay upfront reduces the amount that needs to be financed. A 10% down payment, for example, means approximately 90% of the vehicle price remains to be financed.
3. Enter the financing rate
Use the annual interest or profit rate quoted by the lender or dealer and select the appropriate calculation method.
4. Choose the loan tenure
Spreading repayment over more years can lower the monthly instalment, but the financing remains in place for longer.
5. Compare monthly payment and total repayment
Consider both numbers before evaluating whether a financing option fits your budget.
How your down payment affects the loan
A larger down payment means less money needs to be financed. If the rate and repayment period remain the same, reducing the financing amount will normally reduce both the monthly instalment and the total financing cost.
A smaller down payment can reduce the amount of cash needed at the time of purchase, but it leaves a larger portion of the vehicle price to be financed.
Is a longer car loan always better?
A longer loan tenure can make the monthly instalment look more affordable because repayment is spread across more months. This can make a more expensive vehicle appear easier to fit within a monthly budget.
However, the monthly instalment should not be considered in isolation. The total amount repaid and the length of the financial commitment are also important when comparing financing options.
The loan payment is not the full cost of owning a car
Even if the monthly instalment fits your budget, vehicle ownership can involve several additional expenses.
- Motor insurance or takaful
- Road tax
- Fuel or EV charging
- Routine servicing
- Tyres and repairs
- Parking
- Tolls

Car financing questions
Frequently asked questions about car loans in Malaysia
What is a car loan calculator?
A car loan calculator estimates the monthly instalment and overall financing cost based on the vehicle price, down payment, amount financed, interest or profit rate and repayment tenure.
Does a bigger down payment reduce my monthly payment?
Generally, yes. A larger down payment reduces the amount that needs to be financed. If the rate and tenure remain unchanged, this normally results in a smaller monthly instalment.
Does a longer loan tenure reduce the monthly instalment?
Spreading repayment over more months usually reduces the individual monthly instalment. However, you remain committed to the financing for longer and should also consider the total repayment.
What is a reducing-balance car loan?
Under a reducing-balance calculation, interest or profit is estimated based on the outstanding financing balance. As repayments reduce the principal, the amount on which financing charges are calculated also decreases.
What is a flat-rate car loan calculation?
A flat-rate calculation estimates the financing charge using the original financing amount, the quoted flat percentage and the full financing tenure.
Can I use the calculator for a used car?
Yes. Enter the purchase price and financing terms that apply to the used vehicle. Actual rates and eligible financing periods can differ between new and used vehicles.
Is the lowest monthly instalment always the cheapest option?
No. A lower monthly instalment can result from extending the repayment period. It is important to compare both the monthly payment and the total amount repaid.
Does this calculator include insurance and road tax?
No. The calculation focuses on vehicle financing. Insurance or takaful, road tax, fuel, maintenance, repairs, parking and tolls are separate vehicle ownership costs.
Is this calculator a financing offer?
No. It provides an estimate based on the numbers entered. Actual rates, financing limits, fees, approval criteria and repayments are determined by the lender.
