R2,180 Every Month — The South African Disability Grant Most People Don’t Know They Qualify For

South Africa · Disability Grant · SASSA

If a health condition or disability prevents you from working, the South African government may owe you R2,180 every month.

The Disability Grant is a monthly payment from SASSA designed specifically for South Africans between 18 and 59 years old whose physical or mental condition prevents them from supporting themselves through work.

It is one of the highest-value grants SASSA offers — and many people who qualify have never applied, either because they didn’t know it existed or because they weren’t sure their condition would be accepted.

R2,180 per month
18–59 years of age

Who can receive it

The grant is assessed by SASSA based on a medical evaluation and a few personal criteria:

  • Between 18 and 59 years of age
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker
  • A physical or mental disability that prevents you from working
  • The disability is confirmed by a medical assessment
  • Income and assets below the SASSA means test threshold
  • Not living in a government-funded institution
The condition does not need to be permanent. SASSA also approves temporary disability grants for conditions that are expected to last at least six months. Both physical and mental health conditions are assessed.

What many people don’t know

Many South Africans living with a disability or chronic illness have never applied for this grant — not because they don’t qualify, but because they assumed their condition wouldn’t be accepted or the process would be too complicated.

⚠ SASSA assesses a wide range of conditions — including chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, and physical impairments. Many conditions that people assume won’t qualify actually do.

Before applying — or if you were previously declined — there are specific criteria worth understanding first.

Payments already stopped?

Some people who were approved and receiving the Disability Grant had their payments paused after a SASSA review — without any notification. A lapsed medical assessment or outdated personal details is enough to trigger an automatic suspension.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Disability Grant?
The Disability Grant is a monthly payment of R2,180 provided by SASSA to South Africans between 18 and 59 whose disability or health condition prevents them from working and supporting themselves.
Does my condition need to be permanent?
No. SASSA grants both permanent and temporary disability grants. A temporary grant is issued for conditions expected to last at least six months. Once the period ends, SASSA may reassess — if the condition continues, the grant can be renewed or converted to permanent.
Do mental health conditions qualify?
Yes. Mental health disorders that significantly impair a person’s ability to work are assessed by SASSA the same way physical disabilities are. A diagnosis and medical report from a registered health professional is required.
Can I apply if I was previously declined?
Yes. A previous rejection does not permanently disqualify you. If your condition has worsened, your medical documentation has been updated, or the original rejection was due to a data issue, reapplying with current documentation is the right approach.
Is this grant still active in 2025?
Yes. The Disability Grant is a permanent SASSA programme. Applications are accepted at any time through official SASSA offices or the online portal at sassa.gov.za.
